How Do I Get My GED?

By Susan Pai on June 19, 2012 in DREAMERS, How Do I

This post is also available in: Spanish

The General Equivalence Diploma® (GED) is a 5-subject test that verifies the taker has the academic skill of a high school graduate. Most employers and colleges accept the GED in place of a high school diploma, and many people with GEDs attend college. Enrollment in GED classes satisfies the education requirements to qualify for deferred action offered by the DREAM Act.

*In Florida, you can take the GED in English, Spanish, or French

In order to receive your GED, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old, unless granted a GED® age waiver by your local School Board
  • Register at one of these locations to take the GED (http://data.fldoe.org/workforce/contacts/default.cfm?action=showList&ListID=59 )
  • Provide proper identification, such as a driver’s license, military ID, or passport
  • Pay the Florida GED fee of $70
  • Prepare yourself to pass the exam with…
  • Score of at least 410 on each of the five GED® subtests (Language Arts, Reading; Language Arts, Writing; Science; and Social Studies) AND
  • Overall score of 2250 or higher
